What is the difference between D Harmonic Minor and D Kurd?
You may have heard of a harmonic minor, but what exactly is the difference from a "normal" minor? In this blog we will go into detail about the differences between D Kurd and D Harmonic Minor, why they differ so much from each other and at the same time are surprisingly close to each other.
Just a very small piece of theory, what notes are present on these instruments.
- D Kurd 10: D - A - C - D - E - F - G - A - C - D
- D Harmonic Minor 10: D - A - C# - D - E - F - G - A - C# - D
D Harmonic Minor - Exciting and Mysterious
D Harmonic Minor has an oriental and mysterious sound. This is due to a small but powerful difference in the notes: where in D Kurd you have a C, in D Harmonic Minor you get a C#.
These two notes are right next to each other, but they feel completely different. The C in D Kurd gives a warm and full sound, while the C# in D Harmonic Minor adds an exciting, exotic vibe. You often hear this in Arabic and Spanish (flamenco) music.
🔹 What does it feel like? Mysterious, dramatic, cinematic
🔹 For whom? If you like intense and expressive music
🔹 What does it sound like? Like an exciting story or a journey through a fairy tale
D Kurd - Quiet and Meditative
D Kurd has a more relaxed and balanced sound. Everything feels natural and smooth, making it perfect for quiet, meditative music. The D kurd is also of medium height, neither too low nor too high. It is a very fine instrument.
🔹 How does it feel? Soothing, dreamy, hypnotic
🔹 For whom? If you are looking for a warm, melancholic and soothing sound but also not afraid to whip up the energy!
🔹 What does it sound like? Like a babbling brook or a gentle breeze
Finding it hard to choose?
👉 Option 1: Combine with another pan
Do you already have a D Kurd, or just a hand pan with a C# in it? Then you can combine both tunings!
For example: if you have a D Kurd and a C# Pygmy, you can put the D Kurd on your lap and the C# Pygmy on a stand. By crossing to the C# of your other pan with your playing hand, you still get the mysterious sound of D Harmonic Minor.
👉 Option 2: The same pan twice (almost)? Rather not!
You could of course buy both hand pans, but the differences are so subtle that we don't directly recommend that. If you are considering a second pan, prefer to choose a completely different tuning to really broaden your sound world.
Want to hear the difference really well? Check out the video below, where we show both tunings and explain how they sound! 🎶 Really can't figure it out? Then send us an email @ handpanstudio.com, so we also know that this blog needs to be improved and we can still talk to you.
