The story behind Handpan Studio

Handpan Studio Amsterdam, founded by the duo Deniz Kavafoglu and Joris Cohen. Two handpan players who met 8 years ago on the museum square, in their beloved city of Amsterdam. Their collaboration arose from the shared passion for the handpan, and besides working together, quickly grew into close friendship from which many beautiful performances have blossomed.

More than eight years ago, the two gentlemen, then without any musical background, began their handpan journey.

The handpan as a connector

What initially began out of curiosity about this special instrument quickly grew into a valuable hobby that enriched their lives. The handpan immediately occupied a central place, which allowed them to experience wonderful adventures together. Now, with the rich experiences that playing this instrument has brought them, they feel the calling to share this magic with the world.

Our dream

With our guidance we try to give every (aspiring) handpan player the opportunity to both, enthusiastically, begin their handpan journey. For those already on the road, we strive to increase their playing comfort and confidence. We also work to build a vibrant community by organizing jam sessions, workshops, master classes and hosting events such as the Dutch Handpan Festival.

The founding of Handpan Studio Amsterdam made the handpan more accessible to everyone in the Netherlands and Europe. With affordable instruments, instrument rental, online courses, group courses, open mic - jam sessions and the organization of Dutch Handpan Festival 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, Handpan Studio Amsterdam makes the Netherlands a lot richer in music.
